This research will create a distributed model of international instruction. As a proof of concept, a course will be created using a case-based learning approach to teach communication skills and professionalism to medical students. This course will serve as the test-bed for developing an international model of collaboration by running the course concurrently in Canada and Hong Kong. This model will facilitate the transfer of ideas and information between classrooms, teachers, students and countries. Instead of limiting the engagement of one class with peers from that one class, the intent is to foster teacher and student dialogue internationally about appropriate ways to improve physician-patient communication. Part of this initiative will be to design and evaluate which technological tools are most conducive to promoting learning in the international context. TREs will be created using a case-based approach to situate learning in meaningful learning contexts. Case based learning has been used in multiple disciplines, math, science, medicine, and law. Cases serve as the instructional content since they help individuals develop skills of critical analysis, problem solving, and confidence, particularly when guided with appropriate feedback (Derry & Hmelo, 2005; Kolodner, Cox & Gonzalez-Calero, 2006).This research will create a distributed model of international instruction.
