Athletics have been integral to student life at McGill University since the 1860s, during which time McGill has played an important role in the development of sport.
The first North American-style football game was played between McGill and Harvard in May 1874, using Canadian rules introduced by the McGill team.
On March 3, 1875, a number of McGill students played in the first organized hockey game at Montreal's Victoria Rink. Two years later, McGill formed the first organized hockey team.
In 1891, not long after graduating from McGill, James Naismith had an idea for a game involving a ball and two peach baskets. Within an hour he had established the thirteen basic rules for playing the game now known as basketball.
With forty-nine men's and women's varsity teams currently on campus, McGill has the largest intercollegiate sports program in Canada.
