ADVISORY: re. Quebec's tuition increase and protests

Despite on-going student protests about rising tuition fees, please be advised that McGill will start the fall semester on Sept. 4, 2012, as scheduled. McGill has designed special provisions to ensure that most of the affected CEGEP students - presently estimated to be about 330 individuals - should be able to begin the fall term on time.


Kompon becomes fourth Redmen grad to coach in Stanley Cup finals

When the Los Angeles Kings eliminated Phoenix 4-3 in overtime Tuesday, it paved the way for a fourth former McGill University hockey player to coach in the Stanley Cup finals. Kings assistant coach Jamie Kompon, a 45-year-old native of Thunder Bay, Ont., follows in the footsteps of other Redmen McGill hockey grads, Mike Babcock and the legendary Patrick brothers -- Frank and Lester.

Nomads grad off to McGill

It’s not every day a graduate of the North Winnipeg Nomads gets recruited to play football at a CIS school. That’s why the program couldn’t be more proud that a star offensive lineman from their midget team, Jordan Medal, is off to play for the McGill Redmen in Montreal this fall.

McGill explores possible move to OUA football league in 2013

McGill University has applied to play in the Ontario University Athletics football conference, which, if accepted, would move the Redmen from the Quebec league to Ontario by 2013, the team’s 133rd season on the gridiron.

McGill’s national champs honoured by mayor at City Hall

The McGill University men’s hockey team was feted at Montreal City Hall, Wednesday. The Redmen, who captured their first-ever national championship in March, were received by Mayor Gérald Tremblay and became the third sports team from McGill to sign the city’s Golden Book, an honour reserved for special guests.


Jason Starr appointed head baseball coach at McGill

Jason Starr of Cote St. Luc, Que., has been appointed head coach and field manager of the McGill University men's baseball team. He becomes the third bench boss in team history, behind Johnny Elias (1994 to 1995) and Ernie D'Alessandro (1996 to 2011).

American McCue to test Canadian basketball waters at McGill

HAMPDEN, Maine — Maine’s Mr. Basketball is crossing the border to continue his basketball career at the collegiate level. But he’s not headed south. Christian McCue, who led Hampden Academy to this year’s Eastern Maine Class A championship, will attend McGill University in Montreal this fall.

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: First football game was May 14, 1874

This week marks the 138th anniversary of the historic McGill-Harvard rugby-football confrontation. The two-game series, played at Cambridge, Mass., May 14 and 15, 1874, were the first formal games of North American-style football.

East collects third straight win in CIS East-West Bowl

Saint Mary's kicker Brett Lauther was perfect on five field goal attempts as the East prevailed 24-16 in the 10th edition of the East West Bowl at TD Waterhouse Stadium on the campus of Western University, Saturday afternoon.

2012 Schedule announced for 132nd season of football at McGill

The McGill University football schedule has been finalized for the team's 132nd season this fall. The Redmen, which will feature 75 returnees under head coach Clint Uttley, opens with a pre-season game against Queen's in Kingston on Aug. 26, renewing a long-standing rivalry which dates back to 1884.

McGill's Anderson invited to NFL's Indianapolis Colts rookie camp

McGill place-kicker Austin Anderson, son of former NFL kicker Gary Anderson, has been invited to participate in the Indianapolis Colts' three-day rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis this weekend. Colts head coach Chuck Pagano said Friday morning that Anderson will get a look-see this weekend and that the team would consider signing him as a free-agent for the team's main training camp,

Sparkling Mateus named Team MVP as Martlet volleyball award winners announced

Kaiva Mateus of Montreal West, Que., has been named most valuable player on the McGill University women's volleyball team, announced head coach Rachèle Béliveau. Other team awards were presented to Marie-Christine Lapointe (most improved player) of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., Kristina Pavlovic (most sportmanlike player) of Richmond, B.C., and Yasmeen Dawoodjee (rookie of the year) of Ottawa.

McGill kicker poised for CFL Draft

Austin Anderson has finished four years of schooling at McGill University in Montreal. The Canmorite takes from the school a business management degree and in a few weeks he will take a wife, Jillian Vartanian of Indianapolis, Ind., but tomorrow (Thursday, May 3) he will be hoping that a professional football team will take him as the Canadian Football League holds its annual draft.


Former McGill footballers stresses proper nutrition in address to students in Welland

Matt Nichol addressed student athletes about proper training and conditioning during a Tuesday visit to Lakeshore Catholic High School. Nichol, who was invited to speak at Lakeshore by vice-prinicipal Andrew Boon, his one-time teammate on the McGill University football team, said supplements sometimes are necessary.

Bettez and Dorion pose with cowboy hats at BLG Awards luncheon; CIS athletes of the year to be announced Monday night

Ann-Sophie Bettez and Marc-Andre Dorion, two hockey players from McGill University, were among the eight finalists introduced at the BLG trustees luncheon in Calgary, Sunday. The winners of the 20th Annual BLG Awards, presented to the CIS female and male athletes of the year, will be announced on Monday night.

McGill dominates Queen's to claim Challenge Cup rowing competition

The McGill rowing team won six of eight races to capture the 16th annual Queen's-McGill Boat Challenge on the Lachine Canal, Saturday. It was McGill's first overall title in four years and improved McGill's record to 7-9 overall for the Lorne Gales Challenge Cup, which is the Canadian equivalent of the Oxford-Cambridge race in England and the Harvard-Yale competition in the United States.

McGill football player and coach headed to IFAF world championship in Texas

Dallon Kuprowski, a native of Kanata, Ont., and a quarterback with the McGill Redmen, is among 35 players named to the Canadian junior national squad that will compete at the IFAF's under-19 world championship in Austin, Texas, June 28 to July 8. The team also features Patrick Boies, McGill's new offensive coordinator, who will be part of head coach Noel Thorpe's staff.

16th annual McGill-Queen's Challenge Boat Race on Saturday

The 16th annual McGill-Queen's Challenge Boat Race is scheduled for Saturday morning (April 28) on the Lachine Canal. The Queen's Gaels lead the all-time series 9-6 between the long-time foes since the head-to-head competition was first introduced in 1997. This unique regatta is the Canadian equivalent of England's annual Oxford-Cambridge and the annual Harvard-Yale race in the U.S.

Redmen win 7th annual McGill Lacrosse Spring Tourney

Goaltender Riley McGillis of Peterborough, Ont., was named tournament MVP as McGill cruised to a pair of lopsided victories over Concordia and the University of Massachusetts to capture the seventh annual McGill lacrosse Spring Tournament at Molson Stadium over the weekend. The Redmen hammered Concordia 17-2 on Saturday, followed by an 11-2 conquest over U.Mass on Sunday.

Redmen honour seniors as trophy winners announced at 33rd annual hockey awards gala

Marc-André Dorion, an all-Canadian defenceman, was presented with the Dr. Bobby Bell Trophy as the team MVP at the 33rd annual Friends of McGill Hockey awards gala at La Brasserie Molson, Friday. Other trophies were presented to forwards Maxime Langelier-Parent (Molson Cup; most three-star selections), Nicolas Biniek (most improved player) and Marc-Olivier Vachon (rookie of the year).


Redmen bench boss to coach Canadian U-17 team at FIBA world championship

Canada Basketball has appointed McGill University head coach David DeAveiro to lead the 2012 men's national cadet team, an under-17 squad currently ranked fifth in the world in the FIBA boy's world rankings.
