Since opening 1821, McGill has grown from a small college to a bustling university with two campuses, 11 faculties and some 300 programs of study. Over 33,000 students from roughly 160 countries are proud to call McGill University their home. It is one of Canada's best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the country's leading research-intensive universities.
One of the hallmark's of McGill's tradition is the tremendous ability to balance academic excellence with the extracurricular. Thousands of McGill students participate in the hundreds of clubs, associations and community groups that enrich Montreal and contribute to a vibrant campus life. McGill Athletics and Recreation is proud to boast 29 different intercollegiate teams, numerous competitive clubs, 700 intramural teams plus an extensive Fitness and Recreation program that encompasses over 100 non-credit fitness and recreation courses.

McGill University has an outstanding athletic program that has won several championship titles. To date it has produced 106 Olympians including NHL coach Mike Babcock, swimmers Dick Pound and Marianne Limpert, runner Bruny Surin and hockey players Kim St-Pierre, Charline Labonte and Catherine Ward.
Several McGill athletes have also graduated into the world of professional sports. NHL's Mathieu Darche graduated from McGill in 2000 and the Canadian Football League has taken on more than 50 former McGill Redmen.
Not just famous for outstanding athletic achievements, McGill has produced notable graduates in several other fields. Newly appointed Governor General David Johnston, singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen, actor William Shatner, basketball's founder James Naismith, astronauts Julie Payette and Dave Williams as well as four Nobel Prize Winners all claim McGill as their alma mater.
