 ECONOMICS INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS (SUMMER)

 On this page...

Purpose

The Arts Internship course will provide a vehicle for allowing students who pursue approved internships to gain up to 3 credits towards their degrees. These Internships are to allow students in the Faculty of Arts to gain experience in areas relevant to their fields of study. They involve a minimum of 150 hours of work in a host institution approved by the student’s home department or program.

Students must also consult the Faculty of Arts Internship Office for Arts regulations on internships, available internships or internships opportunities they might have found on their own.

Eligibility Requirements

The Economics Internship course ECON 399 in only open to U2 and U3 students in good standing, normally after completion of at least 30 credits of a 90 credit program or 45 credits of a 96 to 120 credit program. A minimum CGPA of 3.0 is required.

ECON 399 will not fulfill Economics program requirements: it will not be counted towards the Economics honours, majors or minors programs.

This Internship will normally only be approved for work during the summer (between May 1 to August 30). The student must arrange in advance with a faculty member in the Economics Department to accept the supervisory and grading responsibilities.

Submissions to the project supervisor

Students must submit (prior to the fall course registration) to their project supervisor in the Economics Department:

  1. Summary of Internship activities with a description of the host institution (maximum 5 pages).
  2. A letter from the supervisor at the institution attesting to successful completion of the student's tenure.
  3. A term paper on a topic approved by the supervisor and related to the Internship (maximum 20 pages).

Approval Procedure and completion requirements

To obtain approval for the Internship and ECON 399, the steps the student must follow are:

  • Prior to the summer Internship, arrange with a faculty member in the Economics Department who is willing to accept the supervisory and grading responsibilities
  • Complete the Faculty of Arts Internship Course Credit Approval Form (available here) and have it signed by your Economics Academic Supervisor and the Faculty of Arts Internship Officer
  • Submit the completed Form before the beginning of the internship to the Economics Department
  • After the completion of the Internship, submit to the McGill supervisor a letter from the employer/supervisor at the host organization attesting to the satisfactory completion of the Internship, with a copy to the Administrative Officer.
  • Register for ECON 399 for the fall term on Minerva
  • Complete the required term paper prior to the end of classes for the fall term,
  • Ensure that a grade is submitted by the supervisor by the appropriate deadline (one week after the end of classes for the fall term) on MINERVA.
  • Students must also satisfy requirements established by the Arts Internship Office, found here.

NB: The "Student Acceptance Form" must be completed & signed for Approval Forms to be processed.

NOTES: It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the above steps are followed and that an explicit arrangement is made with the McGill supervisor for the grading and submission of the grade on MINERVA by the appropriate deadline (one week after the end of classes for the fall term). If a grade is not submitted by this deadline and the student has not already withdrawn from the course, the grade will become J (incomplete), which constitutes a failure in the course on the student's transcript.

The Administrative Officer will keep a record of the completed Economics Internship Approval Form and the letter from the employer/supervisor at the host organization attesting to the satisfactory completion of the Internship.

Grades

Grades are due one week after the end of classes for the fall term and are to be submitted by the supervisor, after verification of the satisfactory completion of the Internship (see above), on MINERVA .
