These internship awards have different names. Do I have to submit separate applications?

No. There is a single application form for all the internship awards that are listed at www.mcgill.ca/arts-internships/awards.

What criteria are used for selection?

  • Cumulative academic performance;
  • Appropriateness of the internship for your educational and career goals:
  • Degree to which the duties performed as an intern will contribute to the student’s educational and professional development;
  • Degree to which the student will be able to contribute to the work of the host organization/institution;
  • Relevant work/volunteer experience and extra-curricular involvements;
  • Letter(s) of recommendation;
  • Priority will be given to students who intend on receiving course credit for their internship through their department.
    More information on this can be found here.(please note, that credit is not mandatory, but encouraged).
  • Other criteria as defined by the selection committee.

How much funding do the awards provide? If I receive an award, will it cover all my costs?

The  Faculty of Arts Internship Awards range from approximately $500 to approximately $3000 depending on location, length of internship and the award received . The internship awards are meant to cover some costs associated with the internship and are not intended to replace lost income if doing an unpaid internship. Awards tend to cover a maximum of 60% of costs associated with the internship. We encourage all students to plan for alternate sources of funding for their internship.

If I receive an award, how and when will I receive the money?

Award recipients will receive the award funds by direct deposit to a Canadian bank account. Awards are normally paid in July. Interns must be prepared to cover their costs before receiving their award money.

What else do I need to know?

Award recipients have a number of responsibilities that must be fulfilled before, during and following their internship. These are listed in the Handbook for Faculty of Arts Interns available here.
Award recipients are required to attend a mandatory Awards information session in mid-April. Students interning outside of Canada are required to attend a number of pre-departure sessions in March and April.
