2011 Annual Internship Event

On September 21st, 2011, Faculty of Arts students from diverse academic backgrounds, work placements and countries around the world shared their summer 2011 internship experiences.

The Arts Internship Office was honoured to welcome some of the program's generous donors - Mr. Lloyd Darlington, Mr. and Mrs. Morrison and Brenda Hurley, Mr. Kenneth MacKinnon and Ms. Laura Santini.

The student speakers were: Mariel Aramburu, Ariana Collas, Gabriel Devlin, Ariane Duplessis, Alana Guy, Genevieve Hill, Devon LaBuik, Patricia Latendresse, Sally Lin, Lou Mo and Callie Wilkinson.

Dr. Philip Oxhorn, Professor of Political Science and Founding Director of McGill’s Institute for the Study of International Development, opened the 8th Annual Faculty of Arts Internship Event of September 21, 2011.

Ariana Collas (U2, Political Science) interned at the Kosovar Institute for Policy Research and Development. She worked on their new Energy and Environment Program, whose mission is to work on the accountability and transparency of the privatization process of the energy sector.

Sally Lin (U3, Anthropology and Psychology) interned at AID India and got a wonderful experience on public health fieldwork.

Gabriel Devlin (U3 Political Science & Biology), speaking at the Annual Arts Internship Event. In Summer 2011, he interned with Liverpool VCT, an HIV/AIDS research and support organization in Nairobi, Kenya.

Devon LaBuik (U2, Political Science) was an intern at the Canadian Consulate in Detroit during the summer of 2011.

Mariel Arambaru (U3, Political Science and International Development Studies) spent the summer working on Information Management for the United Nations World Food Programme in Panama City

Gabriel Devlin (U3, Biology, Social Studies of Medicine, and Political Science) in a conversation with his donors, Mr. and Mrs. Morrison and Brenda Hurley. Also on the picture, their daughter Prof. Erin Hurley and Barry Weldon of Development and Alumni Relations.

Genevieve Hill (U3 Political Science and International Development Studies) with Mr. Lloyd Darlington (BA’67) who established the Carol & Lloyd Darlington Arts Internship Award in 2010. Genevieve interned in Accra, Ghana at the Women’s Initiative for Self-Empowerment.

2010 Annual Internship Event

On September 29th, 2010, Faculty of Arts students from diverse academic backgrounds, work placements and countries around the world shared their summer 2010 internship experiences.

The Arts Internship Office was honoured to welcome Dean of Arts Christopher P. Manfredi to the event this year, as well as some of the program's generous donors - Prof. Myron Echenberg, Ms. Tania Zouikin, Mr. Allan A. Hodgson and Mr. Lev Bukhman.

The student speakers were: Philippe Baird, Jackson Davidow, Nora Hope, Sarah Kerr, Paolo de Leon, David Meredith, Chardé Morgan, Samantha Nadler, Todd Plummer, Ada Sonnenfeld, Sean Stefanik, Kali Stull, Marc Trussler and Tyler Wilson.

Nora Hope spoke about her internship experience at The Climate Project Canada offices in Montreal, where she helped organize youth-aimed speaking tours on climate change.

Arts Internship Office Coordinator Mat Lyle presented students with practical advice for finding internships, getting credit, applying for funding, and making the most of the resources the AIO has to offer. The main message? It's never too early to get started - and the AIO is here to help.

Veteran presenter Marc Trussler got the audience laughing. Marc interned at the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in Ghana in the summer of 2009 with funding from the Allan A. Hodgson Arts Internship Award. Sean Stefanik spoke about his internship at Liverpool VCT in Kenya, where he got a closer look at the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS, particularly among indigenous populations.

Samantha Nadler talked to the attendees about her internship at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C. She emphasized how valuable an experience being in such a politically and internationally significant city proved to be.

Paolo De Leon interned at UIN Syarif Hidayatulla Jakarta in Indonesia, where he conducted English classes for international relations students. He described the initial difficulty of being uncertain regarding the expectations and duties at the internship.

Chardé interned at the National Fisheries and Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) in Uganda, where she got hands-on experience doing research related to her field, Environmental Studies.

David Meredith talked about the impact of the Grameen Bank, where he interned, on the poorest people of Bangladesh. He related that his internship helped him understand how local realities are unlike theory.

Kali Stull described her time interning with the Food Trust in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which works to provide access to nutritious food. She helped run educational programs for children to make them more aware of the benefits of healthy food and cooking. She told the audience that she enjoyed finding a practical way to engage her interest in food politics.

Philippe Baird spoke about his internship at the Indigenous Peoples of Africa Coordinating Committee (IPACC). He described the varied experiences that his time at the pan-continental NGO offered him while immersing him in the issues surrounding indigenous peoples, land use, and climate change.

2009 Arts Internship Event

On September 23rd, Faculty of Arts students, from diverse academic backgrounds, work placements and countries around the world, shared their summer 2009 internship experiences.

The student speakers were: Byeong Chang, Stephanie Germain, Rachael Graber, Rushil Mistry, Vladi Ivanov, Adam Harris Levine, Stephanie Picard, Brahna Siegelberg, and Marc Trussler with a presentation by Megan Mitton about the Faculty of Arts Annual Photo Exhibit which takes place September 18 to October 19, 2009.

2007 Arts Internship Event

On October 11, 2007 interns were invited to participate in the Fourth Annual Faculty of Arts Annual Internship Event in Moyse Hall. Hosted by Dean Christopher P. Manfredi and The Faculty of Arts Internship Office, the event was an excellent opportunity for 14 students to share their summer 2007 internship experiences.

The photo exhibit organized by the interns highlighted their work in 31 countries around the globe.

2006 Interns

In October 2006, interns were invited to participate in the Faculty of Arts Annual Internship Event. With over 250 students, faculty and alumni in attendance, this event was an excellent opportunity for 13 students to share their internship experiences. A photo exhibit organized by the interns highlighted the work they had been engaged in around the globe.
