Transportation

A variety of travel choices are available to students. The School has looked into the most economical way which is by train. Via Rail is presently having a super seat sale; tickets must be purchased no later than June 19, 2003 directly from Via Rail, telephone number 514-989-2626. The cost is approximately $171.39 tax included. AFTER June 19, 2003, a normal student discount is offered. The cost is approximately $223.00. Elizabeth from Global Alliance has kindly agreed to arrange for the group student fares. You may contact her starting July 1, 2003, at 514-481-7277, ext. 2256 to arrange to purchase the train ticket. Students are encouraged to book as soon as possible as availability is on a first-come, first-served basis and places are limited.

The train departs on August 20, 2003, at 6:45 pm and arrives in Moncton at noon the following day. The remainder of the trip will be undertaken by bus (connection from the train station), to arrive in Saint John at 2 pm. The return to Montreal will take place on August 29, 2003; departure by bus is at 3 pm sharp, to arrive in Moncton at 5 pm The train will depart Moncton at 5:40 pm and will arrive in Montreal at 8 am on August 30.

Van rental may also be quite economical for groups of 6-7 people.

Health Insurance

International students should ensure that their personal health insurance covers them for the period of the course. The McGill Compulsory Health Insurance for International students will only be in effect starting the first day of classes in September.

Required Equipment

Water colours, water colour paper, brushes, pencils, pen and ink, conte crayon, sketch books and drawing paper of varying sizes and types. Sketch pads, sheet material and watercolour blocks should range from 9" x 12" to 18" x 24".

Bicycles have always been valuable additions to the standard "kit" and are highly recommended. We have also found that a folding camp stool or small foam pad can make 2-3 hours on the cold ground much more endurable.

Rendezvous

The entire class is scheduled to meet for the first time at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2003 at the entrance to the Saint John Hilton Hotel, One Market Square, located at the harbour. The first day's work will be discussed at this time.

Evaluation

Evaluation of work is based on quality and quantity (a minimum of 20 works). All portfolios must be left in the freehand drawing room (one pile for Sketching School I and another for Sketching School II) by 10 am on Wednesday, September 3, 2003, in Room 508.

Each student is required to attend one sketching school for the B.Sc.(Arch.) degree (ARCH 324) and a second sketching school for the MArch I (Professional) degree (ARCH 680). Registration for ARCH 324 is possible up to August 20, 2003. Registration for ARCH 680 must be done by September 2, 2003 on the Minerva registration system. If registration (including withdrawals) is problematic, please contact Mary Lanni-Campoli at 514-398-6702 for further instructions.
