Program groups for applicants to the Bachelor of Science B.Sc. in the Faculty of Science

All programs in the Faculty of Science are organized into four (4) groups. The detailed instructions which follow focus on how to apply to these program groups in the Faculty of Science.

  • When you apply for programs in the Faculty of Science you will first need to select a group. It is important that you apply to the group that interests you the most, because if you are admitted to that group you will be able to register for any Major within that group only.

  • Please note that the McGill web application provides applicants with two program choices for a single application fee. Applicants may choose two different Science groups, or choose one Science group and a program from another Faculty. You are encouraged to use both choices. If you want to apply for more than two programs then you will need to complete more than one Web application and you will be required to pay a fee for each additional application.

  •  Each choice will be considered and you will receive an admission decision on each choice.

  • Application procedures are slightly different, depending on whether applicants are graduating from high school, Quebec CEGEP, International Baccalaureate, French Baccalaureate, Advanced Levels or are transferring from another university. Please see the appropriate section below: High School Applicants | IB/French Bac/A-Level Applicants |CEGEP & University Transfer Applicants

  • Instructions on applying to other undergraduate programs can be found in the help file accompanying the web application at: www.mcgill.ca/applying

For High School Applicants

Applying to the Faculty of Science B.Sc.

You have three (3) program groups to choose from:

  • Biological, Biomedical & Life Sciences Group
  • Physical, Earth, Math & Computer Sciences Group
  • Biological-Physical-Computational Sciences Group

STEPS:
1. On the web application, under the first blank field “Faculty/Program/Centre”, select “Faculty of Science".

2. Under “Program”, select one of the three groups listed above.

3. Under “Major /Subject”, “Freshman” will be entered automatically.

4. After you have entered your preferred Faculty, Program and Major/Subject as one choice, you should indicate an alternate choice. You may enter another, different program in the Faculty of Science, following the instructions above, or a program in another Faculty. If you want to apply for more than two programs then you will need to complete more than one Web application and you will be required to pay a fee for each additional application.

What if I eventually want to choose the Neuroscience major?
The Neuroscience major is a restricted enrolment program and is not part of the groups listed above. You may apply for this major at the end of your freshman year and acceptance is determined by academic achievement and space availability. If you are not accepted into this program you can still select any major from your group, so you should apply for whichever group most closely matches your interests.

5. Applicants receive an admission decision for each program choice. If you are admitted, you will be required to confirm that you are accepting the offer of admission and register by a specified deadline. If you are admitted to more than one program, you will be permitted to confirm and register for only one.

For Quebec CEGEP and University Transfer Applicants

Applying to the Faculty of Science B.Sc.

You have four (4) programs to choose from:

  • Biological, Biomedical & Life Sciences Group
  • Neuroscience
  • Physical, Earth, Math & Computer Sciences Group
  • Biological-Physical-Computational Sciences Group

What do these groups mean for CEGEP and University transfer Applicants?

  • If you are admitted to one of these groups, you will be allowed to select any major from within your group at registration time. For example, if you are admitted to the Major “Chemistry” within the group “Physical, Earth, Math & Computer Science”, you would be able to register either in Chemistry or any of the other Majors in that same group.

  • You would also be able to switch between Majors in the same group after you have begun your studies.

  • You also could, after some time studying in one Major, change to a Major in another group by means of an Intra-faculty transfer application. Such transfers will be granted based on academic achievement and space availability in the programs.
