Program groups for applicants to the Bachelor of Science B.Sc. in the Faculty of Science

All programs in the Faculty of Science are organized into three groups. The detailed instructions which follow focus on how to apply to these program groups in the Faculty of Science. Instructions on applying to other undergraduate programs can be found in the help file accompanying the web application at: www.mcgill.ca/applying.

When you apply for programs in the Faculty of Science you will first indicate a group and then the Major/Subject within the group. It is important that you apply to the group that interests you the most, because if you are admitted to that group you will be able to register for any Major within that group only.

Please note that the McGill web application provides applicants with two program choices for a single application fee. Applicants may choose two different Science groups, or choose one Science group and a program from another Faculty.

You are encouraged to use both choices and to indicate your preferred choice first. Both choices will be considered and you will receive an admission decision on both choices. If you want to apply for more than two programs then you will need to complete more than one Web application and you will be required to pay a fee for each such application.

Application procedures are slightly different, depending on whether applicants are graduating from high school, Quebec CEGEP, International Baccalaureate, French Baccalaureate, Advanced Levels or are transferring from another university. Please see the appropriate section below.

For High School Applicants

Applying to the Faculty of Science B.Sc.

  1. On the web application, under the first blank field
    “Faculty/Program/Centre”, select “Faculty of Science".
  2. Under “Program”, select one of the two groups listed below:
    - Biological, Biomedical & Life Sciences Group
    - Physical, Earth, Math & Computer Sciences Group

What do these groups mean for high school students?
Science freshman students all follow a general freshman program in the first year of study. At the end of the first year, they can select their Major from within the group to which they were admitted. Thus, if you are admitted to a Science freshman program, you will be allowed to choose any Major from within that group at the end of your first year. If you wish to change groups at the end of your freshman year, you will be able to make an Intra-faculty transfer application at that time. Such transfers will be granted based on academic achievement and space availability in the programs.

Which Majors are in each group?
In order to provide maximum flexibility, the majors have been separated into large groups as listed below. You don’t have to decide on your exact Major when you apply - you only need to decide which group contains the Majors that interest you the most. For more information about all the Science programs visit: http://www.mcgill.ca/science/prospective/. Before deciding on which group to apply for, students interested in eventually pursuing Medicine or Dentistry should also refer to www.mcgill.ca/science/prospective/medical/, www.mcgill.ca/dentistry/prospective and http://www.mcgill.ca/medadmissions/.

What if I eventually want to choose the Neuroscience major?
The Neuroscience major is a restricted enrolment program and is not part of the groups listed below. You may apply for this major at the end of your freshman year and acceptance is determined by academic achievement and space availability. If you are not accepted into this program you can still select any major from your group, so you should apply for whichever group most closely matches your interests.
