The honorific "Emeritus/Emerita" designation is accorded by the Provost, on the recommendation of the Dean, following consultation with the Chair, to all full professors and librarians who have:
(i) held the rank of full professor/full librarian at the University normally for a minimum of five (5) years;
(ii) retired from the University; and
(iii) satisfactorily maintained the standard for which they were appointed to that rank.

ITEMDESCRIPTION

Procedure

On retirement, each full professor or full librarian will be considered for the honorific by the Dean. Retiring staff do not have to apply and no formal supporting dossier is required.

Once approved, a letter and certificate will be sent to the retired staff member by the Provost advising them of the conferral of the honorific.

Once the letter is issued, the Department or Faculty administrator must have the honorific recorded into Banner via Minerva using position code:

Professorial Staff

- AFN991 (Honorary Emeritus/Emerita)
- AFK991 (Honorary Emeritus/Emerita) who are jointly appointed

Librarian Staff

- AFN990 (Honorary LIB Emeritus/Emerita).

Effective Date of Conferral

Once they have received the Provost's letter, staff members may use the Emeritus/Emerita designation effective from the date of retirement.

Endowed/Named Chairholders

Any retired or emeritus staff member shall retain as part of their designation the name of any named chair or professorship held prior to their retirement.

Announcement of New Emeritus

The names of those conferred the honorific will appear in the Convocation Booklet. However, there is no formal presentation at Convocation.
