This pages lists all eligible academic administrative classifications (below the level of Dean) for the heads of units or areas within faculties or departments, which are the prerogative of the Provost (or delegate) (or other as indicated in the "Definition" column).

Academics must hold an academic (tenure-stream or CAS) appointment in order to hold one of these appointments.

Heads of Departments (or equivalent)

Chair The head of a department.  The University Statues provide that "There shall be a Chair of each Department appointed in accordance with the provisions of Articles 1.3.4.2 and 8.1.6." (Statutes, Articles 9.1.1, 9.2.1). Academic Administrative Appointment Process All current Chair listings

Director (Chair-equivalent) The head of a unit equivalent to a department.  The University Statues provide that "There shall be over each [School, Institute, Centre or other academic unit of the University] a Director. The Director of each School, Institute, Centre or other academic unit shall be under the direction and supervision of the Dean of the Faculty to which it has been allocated and shall exercise the functions of Chair of a Department." Usage of Acting vs Interim

  • The designation “Acting” is to be used when a person is appointed to a position during the temporary absence of the incumbent.
  • The designation “Interim” is to be used when a person is appointed to a vacant position while a search is underway for a new incumbent.

Director (Other) A Director leads a unit or area which is not a full Department or School/Institute. A Director shall perform such duties as may be assigned by a Dean. Academic Administrative Appointment Process Not listed

Branch Head A Branch Head is responsible for all of the functions of the branch (examples: Law Library, Osler Library…), from leading and managing the staff and the delivery of library and information services and makes sure that the objectives of the branch are met and are aligned with the strategic plan of the library. The stipend for a branch head is $6,000 and branch heads report into the Associate Director (Client Services). They are appointed and the appointments vary from 3 to 5 years with the possibility of renewal. Academic Administrative Appointment Process Not listed

Team Coordinator A Team Coordinator is a position within the University Library network. A Team Coordinator provides guidance, instruction, direction and leadership to a group of employees with in a branch or a service for the purpose of achieving a key result (cataloguing of rare material for example); which ensure that the results of the team are aligned with the strategic plan of the unit they are part of. Team coordinators report to a Branch Head or Associate Director within the Libraries and receive a $3,000 stipend. They are appointed and the appointments vary from 3 to 5 years with the possibility of renewal. Academic Administrative Appointment Process Not listed

Program Director Program Directors head an academic program within a department, school or institute. Please note that an appointment to this classification cannot be a stand-alone academic appointment at the University. Examples are undergraduate or graduate program director; or in the Faculty of Medicine, the director of a residency training program, or undergraduate medical curriculum.

Program Director appointments are the prerogative of the Chair of the Department. The Dean must be notified of all such appointments.

Medical Director Medical Director is a classification reserved for the Faculty of Medicine. It designates individuals who are assigned additional duties as director of a division of a department in a hospital. It also designates core members of staff who are receiving stipends for special duties of a temporary nature assigned to them by the Dean of Medicine.
