This page provides Academic and Librarian Staff with some guidance regarding which tenure cohort applies to them and under what circumstances a staff member can switch cohorts.

 


Where to Find the Appropriate Regulations

Articles Article 5.4.1
The staff member shall elect, as provided in the regulations, policies, and guidelines on leaves, whether to include or exclude as periods of service for tenure consideration periods of authorized leave for which such election is provided from time to time in University regulations, policies and guidelines on leaves for full-time academic staff.
Article 3.4.1
The staff member shall elect, as provided in the regulations, policies, and guidelines on leaves, whether to include or exclude, as periods of service for tenure consideration, periods of authorized leave for which such election is provided from time to time in applicable University regulations, policies and guidelines on leaves.
Article 5.4.2
The staff member shall elect whether to include or exclude as periods of service for tenure consideration periods of authorized short-term disability, long-term disability leaves, or other leaves provided for by applicable legislation, where such leave or leaves are longer than three consecutive months.
Article 3.4.2
The staff member shall elect whether to include or exclude, as periods of service for tenure consideration, periods of authorized short-term disability, long-term disability leaves, or other leaves provided for by applicable legislation, where such leave or leaves are longer than three (3) consecutive months.
Article 5.4.3
A staff member’s election under Sections 5.4.1 and 5.4.2 shall be communicated in writing to the Provost, with a copy to the chair and dean, no later than August 31 of the year of consideration in which the staff member would normally be subject to mandatory tenure consideration.
Article 3.4.3
A staff member’s election under Sections 3.4.1 and 3.4.2 shall be communicated in writing to the Provost with a copy to the Director or Dean of Libraries and the Secretary-General, no later than August 31 of the year of consideration in which the staff member would normally be subject to mandatory tenure consideration.

Valid Reasons to Switch Tenure Cohorts

Period as Pre-Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (Special Category)

Any time spent in a pre-tenure-track Assistant Professor (Special Category) position prior to conversion to a tenure-track Assistant Professor position is excluded from years of service calculations for the tenure-track reappointment process and the tenure cohort clock.
