Whom Does This Page Concern?

This page concerns procedures for tenured or tenure-track academic staff.

Contract Academic Staff should consult the Leaves for Family Events section of the Employing Unranked Academic Staff Guidelines in conjunction with the Quebec Labour Standards with regards to applicable Maternity/Parental Leave benefits. HR Shared Services (local 4747) can provide further assistance regarding applicable Maternity and Parental leave procedures.


Regulations

Maternity Leaves

All maternity leaves for tenure-track or tenured academic staff fall under the Regulations on Maternity Leave for Tenured and Tenure-track Members of the Academic Staff available from the University Secretariat's website.

Extended Maternity Leaves

All extended maternity leaves fall for tenure-track or tenured academic staff fall under the Regulations on Extended Maternity and Extended Parental Leave for Tenured and Tenure-track Members of the Academic Staff Staff available from the University Secretariat's website.

Parental and Extended Parental Leaves

All parental leaves fall for tenure-track or tenured academic staff fall under the Regulations on Parental Leave for Tenured and Tenure-track Members of the Academic Staff, and the Regulations on Extended Maternity and Extended Parental Leave for Tenured and Tenure-track Members of the Academic Staff available from the University Secretariat's website.


McGill Procedures for tenure-track or tenured Academic Staff

The staff member must give written notice to the chair, director or dean as soon as possible, and not later than 60 days prior to the term during which the leave will begin, to allow adequate planning for teaching replacements. The notification should be accompanied by a medical certificate stating the anticipated due date of the birth of the child or arrival date in case of adoption. The chair must submit the request to the Dean, who submits it to the Provost.

All maternity & parental leaves for tenure-track or tenured academic staff are granted under the authority of the Board of Governors and must be confirmed by a letter signed by the Provost.


QPIP Application Procedures

Academic Staff should be aware that McGill maternity/paternity and parental benefits are paid in combination with governmental benefits payable through the Ministère de l'Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale's Quebec Parental Insurance Program (QPIP) (for Quebec residents).

The staff member has to apply no later than the start date of maternity/paternity leave or the week the child is born.
