What you need to know

As a parent of a new McGill student, you probably want to learn as much as you can about the university your child has chosen. The McGill Parents Association is here to help and answer your questions. To make the process easier, the Association invites you to the McGill Parents Tent.

Scheduled for August 23 to 26, 2013, the event will take place on lower campus, just inside the Roddick Gates, at the intersection of Sherbrooke Street West and McGill College Avenue.

Opening hours are:
Friday, August 23 – 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Saturday, August 24 – 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Sunday, August 25 – 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Monday, August 26 – 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The place to start

Consider the Parents Tent your one-stop resource centre for everything McGill. Drop by with your concerns and questions. If we don't have the answers, we'll find them for you.

Moreover, at the Parents Tent you can:

• Meet representatives from the Parents Association and chat with new or current McGill parents over light refreshments;
• Inquire about on-campus services and resources available to your student;
• Find out about other services such as banking (rbc_studentbanking_eng.pdf), credit cards, cellular telephone plans and insurance;
• Pick up your McGill Parents Handbook as well as your Red Privilege Card, offering parents free admission to museums, activities such as library tours and lectures, and special discounts on campus for the duration of Parents Tent.

Activities offered in conjunction with Parents Tent are:

• A special opening reception
• A complimentary barbecue
• Classes Without Quizzes (CWOQs)
• Parent information sessions (coordinated by the First-Year Office)
• Facts About Fees information sessions (coordinated by the Student Accounts Office)
• Campus tours
• Library tours
• Bus tours

What are CWOQs?

Our Classes Without Quizzes, or CWOQs, give you a taste of the McGill classroom experience at informal lectures on topics geared to new McGill parents. A wide range of CWOQ lectures are offered during Parents Weekend (October 11-14) by some of our most distinguished professors. So be sure to pick up your Parents Weekend event schedule at the Tent or check the Parents Association website and plan to join us again in the fall.

Participate

If you're not yet registered with the Parents Association, please take a moment to complete the online Parents Association Registration Form. By registering, you will receive news of interest to parents, invitations to McGill events in your area and periodic requests for support. As a result, you’ll always know what's new on campus and what you can do to help. Registering also entitles you to a Parents Welcome Gift upon checking in at the Tent!

Events Registration

Please note that due to limited space, online registration is mandatory for all paid events, namely the Opening Reception and bus tours of Montreal.

To participate in Facts About Fees and the Parents Info Sessions, you need to ask your student to register you via McGill in Mind, as these events are not organized by the Parents Association.

Registration to all other tours and talks not mentioned above will take place on site, at the Parents Tent kiosk, on a first-come, first-served basis.
