The Alan Edwards Fellowship in Clinical Pain Research

The Pain Centre of McGill University is open for applications for the Alan Edwards Fellowship in Clinical Pain Research. Fellows will divide their time between clinical pain research and clinical activities at the Pain Centre that will be directly related to their research. This Fellowship position is intended for physicians in multiple disciplines who are interested in conducting original clinical research in the field of Pain Medicine. Previous research experience is preferable but not mandatory. The Fellowship has a stipend that is commensurate with experience. The start date for this position is flexible. Funding is for one year, with a second year of support contingent on satisfactory progress.

Cardiovascular Anesthesia

This fellowship is jointly based at the SMBD Jewish General Hospital and Royal Victoria Hospital (6 months at each site). Each hospital cares for a range of cardiac cases, with the Royal Victoria Hospital being the designated site for transplant surgery. Intra-operative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is routinely performed at each site.

Chronic Pain

This fellowship is based at the Montreal General Hospital. The multidisciplinary pain clinic provides treatment for approximately 5,000 patients per year, encompasasing a wide variety of pain problems, from simple to rare and complex and including both benign and malignant etiologies.

The Clinical Fellowship in Pain Medicine at the McGill Pain Centre is a comprehensive training program. Fellows are assigned their own patients and develop and implement a treatment plan under the supervision of a staff physician. Medical, psychological and interventional approaches are employed as patients are followed over time.

The educational environment of the McGill Pain Centre allows for flexibility to pursue a trainee’s particular interests such as acute pain, palliative care, cancer pain management and interventional approach with the multidisciplinary team. There are also specialized clinics focusing on fibromyalgia, visceral, orofacial, and neuropathic pain throughout the week.

  • The Alan Edwards Fellowship in Clinical Pain Research
This Fellowship position is intended for physicians who will divide their time between clinical activities and clinical pain research. The research opportunities at the McGill Pain Centre are considered world-class. Fellows may participate in existing clinical trials or conduct basic research in human or animal subjects. Past fellows have published papers, presented at conferences and gone on to conduct important research after completing the fellowship.
  • Clinical Fellowship in Pain Medicine
This Fellowship position is intended for physicians who are interested in learning about the clinical aspects of Pain Medicine. Only candidates coming with their own funding will be considered for this position.

Obstetrical Anesthesia

The McGill obstetrical anesthesia fellowhip is a 1 year anesthesia fellowship based at the Royal Victoria Hospital, in Montreal, Canada. This is an adult tertiary care centre, with in-house access to all adult medical, surgical, and radiologic subspecialties, an adult intensive care unit, and a level 3 neonatal intensive care unit. The Royal Victoria Hospital Birthing centre is staffed with over 20 obstetricians. There is a Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) service, run by 7 obstetricians, that provides care for high risk pregnancies. There are more than 20 anesthesiologists who provide coverage in the birthing centre, including several fellowship trained obstetric anesthesiolgists. There is a certified Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) instructor on staff. There are internal medicine specialists whose main focus is the medical management of the complex parturient. There are invasive radiologists who provide invasive radiologic treatment for the bleeding parturient.

There is busy obstetrical practice at the Royal Victoria Hospital. The birthing centre had 3800 deliveries in 2010. The epidural rate is 90%, and the caesarean delivery rate is 27%. Ultrasound guidance for epidural placement is performed. Various fetal procedures are performed, including fetoscopy, and placental laser ablation.

The fellow in obstetric anesthesia will have exposure to both high and low risk obstetric cases. They will learn in depth the practice and theory of the anesthetic and obstetric management of the parturient. They will learn how to efficiently and safely manage a busy tertiary care obstetric floor. They will also provide teaching for medical students and anesthesia residents.

The fellow will have one non-clinical day a week. The fellow will be expected to develop and perform a research project with this time. There are multiple active research projects underway at the Royal Victoria Hospital, and there is a research assistant available to help with the daily administration of research projects. Current topics of study include the study of mechanisms of labour pain, the ideal placement of epidurals for labour, and ideal post caesaean delivery analgesia. The fellow will be sponsored to attend the annual Society for Obstetric Anesthesiology and Perinatology (SOAP) conference, and will be expected to submit an abstract of their research project.

We are developing a medical simulation room at the Royal Victoria Birthing Centre, and the fellow would be expected to participate in, and develop training scenarios.

There are opportunities for the fellow to work in general adult operating room if desired, but this is not demanded of the fellow.

The Birthing Centre at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal is a very pleasant place to work, with cohesive, supportive nurses, and a well run medical team. If you wish to complete an obstetrical anesthesia fellowship in a dynamic, pleasant environment that offers challenging cases and excellent research opportunities, in a city that offers some of the best culture in North America, consider the OB Anesthesia fellowship at McGill.

NeuroAnesthesia

This fellowship is based at the Montreal Neurological Hospital with approximately 1500 cases annually. This trainee will gain a wide experience in providing monitoring and anesthesia for virtually all aspects of adult neurosurgery except trauma. The practice includes the treatment of refractory epilepsy, brain tumors, complex pain syndromes, movement disorders, aneurysms and other vascular lesions (both endovascular and surgical) and spinal disorders. Awake craniotomies are routinely performed. A one or two months neuro-ICU rotation is also possible.

Pediatric Anesthesia

This fellowship is based at the Montreal Children's Hospital, with approximately 7,000 cases per year. This fellowship enables the candidates to gain experience in tertiary pediatric and neonatal anesthesia. Candidates with pediatric anesthesia experience and who have a special interest in the treatment of pediatric acute and chronic pain are eligible to apply for the Louis Sessenwein Pain Fellowship. Opportunities also exist for a dedicated pediatric cardiac anesthesia fellowship.

Regional Anesthesia

This fellowship is based at the Montreal General Hospital, with 2,500 trauma and orthopedic surgery cases per year. The trainees are exposed to a wide variety of regional anesthesia techniques in adults involving the head, higher and lower extremities, and trunk.

Regional Works' website.

Clinical Metabolic Research Fellowship [.pdf]

A one-year fellowship in metabolic research is available. The emphasis is on understanding mechanisms of modulating stress response using pharmacological, nutritional and physical interventions. The research is directed to study different models of human surgical stress and recovery process.
